Citizen's benefit (Bürgergeld)

Basic income support including rent and heating for people able to work.

  • Submit the application to your local Jobcenter – payments start from the month of application.
  • Protected assets: up to EUR 15,000 per person plus an exempt primary residence within reasonable size.
  • Obligations: cooperate with job search measures and provide documentation. Sanctions require a written hearing.

Collect documents in advance: tenancy agreement, bank statements, proof of expenses.

Housing allowance (Wohngeld)

A subsidy for rent costs based on household income and local rent levels.

  • Apply at the municipal housing allowance office. Processing currently takes 6–8 weeks – follow up if necessary.
  • Amount depends on household size, income and municipal rent category. Online calculators give a first estimate.
  • Paid retroactively from the month of application. Update documents when the approval period (usually 12 months) ends.

Can be combined with the child benefit supplement if eligible.

Emergency funds

Municipalities and charities run hardship funds for urgent needs.

  • Caritas, Diakonie and social welfare offices provide grants for electricity arrears, school supplies or winter clothing.
  • Required documents: ID card, proof of income or benefits, and invoices. A short description of the hardship is usually sufficient.
  • Decisions are often made within a few days – phone or email follow-ups speed things up.

Ask about interest-free municipal loans if grants are unavailable.
